Dressing Tables

I love dressing tables. Growing up as the oldest girl in a family of 9 children, we had very little privacy, let alone the space or the time, to have a dressing table or vanity where we could style our hair, put on make-up, or make sure our outfits matched. So, when I finally had a space of my own, I had to include a spot for a dressing table. Interviewing women for all my books, I’ve found that this is usually one of their favorite spots in their house. Nothing like a little pampering!

Here’s my dressing table from my book ‘The Soul of a House’. The table itself is what I call a ‘curbside treasure’ – I spotted it waiting for the garbage men and forced Kevin to stop the car and rescue it. Photo © Nancy E. Hill

Close friends of mine live in “La Casa Pacifica”, formerly the private home of President & Mrs. Nixon. Here, an antique table from the 19th century is placed to take full advantage of the beautiful California sun. Photograph © Jennifer Levy from my book ‘Getaways’.

A bust of a young French girl and an ornate mirror dominate the dressing table in the unabashedly feminine master suite of Jessica McClintock’s home. Photo © John Vaughn, from my book Bathrooms.

A NY designer took inspiration from rich English Country fabrics to create this dressing table. The simple green & white silk stripe used on the vanity & window treatments play off the more patterned florals used in the rest of the room. Photo © Nancy E. Hill from my book Haven.
