Chris’ Choice…

Music for your Life

Dear friend & incredible musician Steve Tyrell’s newest CD – It’s Magic – The Songs of Sammy Cahn

Part of my decorating philosophy has been to incorporate all five senses into every room – a visually bold paint color, the feel of a soft throw, the aroma of a candle, a bowl filled with favorite candies and, of course, the sound of music. Whether white noise for meditation or sleep, jazz standards for a dinner party, or something up-tempo to wake you up and get you out the door in the morning, the presence of sound adds so much to a room – and to our lives. My taste in music varies depending on my mood, but here are some favorites of mine that are sure to set the right atmosphere in your home for the hustle of day-to-day life or for a special event.

Steve Tyrell – A dear friend and an unbelievably talented performer. Kevin & I see him in New York City whenever we have the chance. But if you can’t make it to one of his live shows, his CDs are available online, in stores & on itunes. From Frank Sinatra to the Gershwins to Bacharach, Steve puts his jazzy spin on many of the classics we all love. On his most recent album ‘It’s Magic’, he sings the songs of Sammy Cahn – it’s what I have playing on my ipod right now!

Armand St. Martin – Another friend of ours – equally talented but with a totally different sound! Armand’s music is inspired by his life in New Orleans – and it’s such a joy to listen to. With a rock-and-roll, boogie-woogie vibe, Armand plays the kind of music that is sure to be a mood lifter. His CDs – ‘Sizzling’, ‘Alligator Ball’ and ‘Katrina Anthem’ are available on Amazon and

Susie Mantell – Not a musician, but the relaxation CD of Susie Mantell’s is something I listen to every day. We all need our way to relax – whether it’s yoga, meditation, or another discipline, and I’ve found that when it comes to guided meditation, her ‘Your Present – a Half Hour of Peace’ can’t be beat. But don’t just take my word for it – it comes backed by Ladies Home Journal, Weight Watchers Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and others.

Nature – Living in a rural and, often, a suburban area, there’s a constant hum from nature outside – birds chirping, crickets buzzing, frogs ribbiting…so sometimes just opening a window and letting mother nature provide the soundtrack is a perfect idea. It’s harder in the city – but there are so many ways to bring the sounds of the outdoor inside – by CD player, Ipod or right on your phone. It can be a nice option over the honking cars outside!

So, whatever your favorite music is, play it throughout your home! It’s a great way to start your morning, a nice greeting when you come home from a long day at a work, and the perfect way to relax yourself to sleep.
